IPU Draft Resolution on Nuclear Disarmament

The 120th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be held in Ethiopia 5-10 April 2009 at which time the IPU will adopt a resolution on nuclear disarmament.

The draft resolution presented to the 119th IPU Assembly in Geneva in October 2008 called parliamentarians to be active in promoting full ratification and entry-into-force of the Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty, cuts in the nuclear weapon stockpiles, removal of all nuclear forces from high-alert status, and universal adherence to International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. Proposals by PNND members that the resolution also address fissile materials and support the UN Secretary-General’s five-point plan for nuclear disarmament have been integrated into the revised draft resolution. PNND members have also proposed text on the role of Nuclear Weapon-Free Zones which is likely to be added during the Assembly.

PNND will hold an event for parliamentarians at the IPU Assembly in Ethiopia on actions to implement the IPU resolution. For information on the IPU Assembly activities contact alyn@pnnd.org or lvontrapp@pnnd.org.
