Consultations

MPI’s Strategy Consultations, often held at the United Nations and other prominent locations, are designed to strengthen the treaties that protect humanity from the further spread of nuclear dangers by providing a secluded, off-the-record environment for diplomats and policy makers to come to a deeper understanding of one another’s positions before returning to the formal negotiating table.

• September 28-29, 2006 - Ottawa, Canada
Third Meeting of The Article VI Forum: “Responding to the Challenges to the NPT”
Held for NGOs, representatives from the UN and other international agencies, and diplomats. Chair: Douglas Roche, O.C.

• March 2-3, 2006 - The Hague, The Netherlands
Second Meeting of The Article VI Forum Consultation – “Gaining Confidence in Nuclear Disarmament Steps”
Held for high-level representatives of 21 states.

• October 3, 2005 - United Nations, New York
Inaugural "Article VI Forum"
Held for high-level representatives from 28 states, as well as representatives from NGOs and the UN.

January 26-28, 2005 - The Carter Center, Atlanta
"Atlanta Consultation II: On the Future of the NPT"
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter hosted a consultation of diplomats and government officials at The Carter Center. The Consultation sought to preserve and strengthen the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) which President Carter said "was deeply wounded and whose very life is threatened."

April 26, 2004- United Nations, New York
"Ensuring Full Implementation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty."
Attended by 30 governments and 40 NGO representatives.
Chair: Dr. Randy Rydell, Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs at the United Nations.
Keynote speaker Marian Hobbs, New Zealand's Minister for Disarmament.

February 26-27, 2004 - Ottawa, Canada
“Building bridges: The Non-Proliferation Treaty and Canada’s Nuclear Weapons Policies”

"Advancing the NPT 13 Practical Steps"
Chair: Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister, Canada
Held for delegates at the United Nations during the 2003 Preparatory Committee for the 2005 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.


• October 3, 2002 - United Nations, New York
"Priorities for Preserving the NPT"
Chair: Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister, Canada
Held for delegates at the United Nations during the 2002 meeting of the First Committee of the General Assembly.


• April 3, 2002 - United Nations, New York
"Nuclear Disarmament and Human Security: Ending the Conflict"
Chair: Jonathan Granoff
Held for delegates at the United Nations during the 2002 Preparatory Committee for the 2005 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"Towards NPT 2005: An Action Plan for the 13 Steps"
Representatives of 16 governments and 30 NGO leaders attending.


• October 17, 2000 - United Nations, New York
"NPT 2000 Review Follow-Up"
For 30 government and NGO representatives.


• July 20-23, 2000 - Pugwash, Nova Scotia
"The Pugwash Consultation"
A planning meeting for MPI, and other NGO and UN representatives.


• January 26-27, 2000 - Carter Center, Atlanta
"Atlanta Consultation"
Chair: Jonathan Granoff
Co-Host: President Jimmy Carter
For 45 international leaders co-sponsored by the Carter Center, with the participation of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.


• October 14, 1999 - United Nations, New York
"New Perspectives on Nuclear Disarmament"
Organized and facilitated by MPI for 40 government representatives and 20 NGO delegates.


• February 25-27, 1999 - Rockefeller Foundation, New York
Organized and facilitated by MPI for 10 government representatives and 46 NGO delegates.
